The ANC and EFF reportedly could not agree on who should hold the position of Mayor in Ekurhuleni.

As a result, the meeting to elect the mayor in Ekurhuleni was cancelled at the last minute and the post stands empty. This could lead to Ekurhuleni being placed under administration.

Mzi Khumalo, the MEC for Cooperative Governance, could have to step in within the next seven days if a new mayor is not elected.

“As the matter stands in Ekurhuleni, we do not have a government.”
- Mzi Khumalo, MEC for Cooperative Governance

Khumalo says there are mechanisms to help resolve disputes in coalition governments, but they have not been used in all cases.

“I do not think municipalities are ready for coalition governments.”
