JOHANNESBURG - As the governing party faces renewed backlash over claims of corruption in its ranks, the African National Congress (ANC) said it remains committed to purging itself of questionable conduct.

The ANC is again under fire after former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was hauled to court to face criminal charges for fraud, corruption, and money laundering.

She allegedly received over R4.5 million in kickbacks from a defence contractor back when she was the defence minister.

The 67-year-old now joins several other ANC leaders accused of maladministration while serving in government.

ANC Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane said, however, that it was untrue that there was a lack of accountability in the party.

"It is only the ANC that has got bodies such as the integrity commission, [and] the national disciplinary committee.

"These are processes that comrade Nosiviwe had informed the organisation about and there are organisational processes that she herself has said she is prepared to subject herself to."
