CAPE TOWN - A case of culpable homicide is being investigated following the death of a nine-year-old girl on a farm in Swartland.

Rural activist Billy Claasen says Marly-Anne Boks was being transported on a tractor at a farm in Rietfontein between Redelinghuys and Aurora on Friday last week.

"So, on Friday afternoon I was phoned by farmworkers they told me about a child that had been caught under the wheels of a tractor and she died on the scene. The police and forensics services were on the scene."

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said a 40-year-old man was operating the tractor at the time.

"The victim was declared deceased by the medical personnel. Laaiplek police registered a case of culpable homicide for further investigation."

Claasen said social services were providing trauma counselling to the driver who is believed to be a relative of Marly-Anne.
