CAPE TOWN - Parliament is preparing for the exit of members of Parliament (MPs) who won’t be returning in the seventh administration.

Those who retire or don’t crack the nod for another stint as a legislator won’t, however,  be left without perks.

These include state-subsidised medical aid, domestic flights and relocation allowances.

In a handbook published by Parliament, National Assembly MPs are informed they will receive their salaries until the day before the elections.

Those who’ve completed at least one five-year term will also receive a loss-of-office gratuity of four months’ salary, and an additional amount for longer service.

Those who don’t return will also be able to retrieve their pensions.

They will have the choice to continue on Parliament’s medical aid scheme, and will be subsidised by as much as 66% if they’ve served for eight or more years.

Parliament will also pay for the relocation of belongings from Cape Town, up to a maximum of R24,000.

An MP who is not re-elected, resigns or is redeployed will also be entitled to two return flights between their home base and Cape Town to facilitate their move.

Their dependants will receive one single flight from Cape Town.

Former members and their spouses will continue to enjoy travel perks - which include 12 single air tickets per year for the next five years.
