JOHANNESBURG - At least five people have died in a car accident in the Eastern Cape after a minibus taxi crashed into a stationary vehicle.
The provincial Department of Transport says the deadly crash took place on the N2, near Makhanda, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
It is alleged that owing to poor visibility, the taxi driver could not see the stationary vehicle until it was too late to avoid a collision.
Eastern Cape departmental spokesperson Unathi Binqose says 12 people have been transported to different hospitals for treatment.
"As we hit the halfway mark of the Arrive Alive campaign, this is by far the worst case we've had in the province so far."
Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
