JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has expressed sadness following the alleged rape and murder of a grade 11 learner.
The deceased attended Chipa-Tabane Secondary School in Refilwe, Cullinan.
It's believed the girl left home at around 6pm on Sunday and failed to return, resulting in her mother filing a missing person’s report with police on the same night.
The learner's family then received information that she was last seen with her cousin and visited that person's house the following day, where the girl's body was apparently found in a room.
A suspect handed himself over to police and is expected to appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
"According to information at our disposal, the learner was allegedly sexually assaulted before being strangled to death,” said Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona.
“The MEC did indicate that he's devastated by the passing of the learner, especially through such gruesome circumstances."
