Since 7 October last year, more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, and the threat of famine is imminent.

After multiple failed attempts, the UN has called for an immediate ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages.

The US, an ally to Israel, abstained from the vote after vetoing previous drafts.

Dangor says this indicates that the US is sending a strong message to Israel that they're concerned about the situation in Gaza.

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, said Palestinians have experienced untold suffering in the past six months.

“Even if the ceasefire happens now and the siege was lifted, it would take generations to deal with the trauma and devastation.”

Dangor says this resolution should've come a long time ago.

“While we welcome the ceasefire resolution, it is a little too late for many of the Palestinians.”
- Zane Dangor, Director General of the Department of International Relations, and Cooperation

But even with the resolution being adopted, attacks have continued in Gaza.

The UN has warned that failing to implement the binding resolution would be unforgivable.
