JOHANNESBURG - The South African Communist Party (SACP) is set to picket outside Constitution Hill on Wednesday morning over what it termed racist remarks by Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, John Steenhuisen.

Last month, he commented on Gauteng's crime wardens while leading a picket outside Soshanguve Police Station.

The comments sparked public outrage, with some labelling his remarks as racially insensitive.

The SACP said its picket formed part of its intention to lodge a formal complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission, which it expects will bring the matter to the attention of the National Assembly.

The party's provincial spokesperson, Nkosithethile Bonga, said this was not their only step against Steenhuisen, adding that a case of crimen injuria was opened against him last week Tuesday.

"We have received a case number, it has been registered, it will be investigated. We are waiting for law enforcement officials to update us, as to how far they have gone."

The picket is scheduled for 10am on Wednesday.
