JOHANNESBURG - National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula's bid for access to the police docket ahead of her looming arrest has been described as bizarre.

Mapisa-Nqakula is facing allegations of corruption dating back to when she was the minister of defence.

She is accused of accepting millions of rands in bribes during her tenure, and after a raid at her Johannesburg home last week, it was expected that she would hand herself over to the police on Friday.

She has now approached the court with an application, which was heard on Monday, to interdict her arrest.

The judgment is reserved until next Tuesday.

The relief she’s seeking though is pending another application she launched last week to be allowed to appear in the dock by way of a summons instead and for access to the State’s case against her, which she wants to be heard early in April.

Attorney Ulrich Roux said while these types of applications aren’t unprecedented, seeking disclosure of the docket at this stage is.

“There’s no way that the judge can prescribe to the NPA [National Prosecuting Authority] when they must disclose a docket to an accused person.”
