CAPE TOWN - Ten African National Congress (ANC) MPs were reprimanded in the National Assembly on Tuesday for failing to make their financial disclosures to Parliament on time.

Among those who’ve violated the ethics code are the deputy minister in the Presidency, Nokuzola Tolashe, chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, Jerome Maake and prominent MP, Mandla Mandela.

Acting Speaker Lechesa Tsenoli has reminded MPs of their oath of office to obey the law.

With no objections to the sanctions against the defaulting MPs, Deputy Speaker Tsenoli called on those in the House to stand.

MPs Xola Nqola and Mandela appeared on screen sitting in their offices while Xolani Msimango and Mohatla Tseki were shown seated in their cars.

"A reprimand in the House is aimed at ensuring that discipline is meted out fairly, transparently, consistently."

The offending MPs had offered a variety of excuses for not meeting the September 2023 deadline, including personal problems and also technology troubles.

Tsenoli reminded them of the importance of filing their financial declarations on time.

"These undertakings foster both trust between individual parliamentarians and the public but also the status of Parliament as a preeminent institution of the state."

The MPs will also be fined, with between 20 and 30 days of their salaries being docked.
