Gugs Mhlungu spoke to resident Chef and Food Anthropologist, Dr Anna Trapido.
Listen to their conversation in the audio clip below.
Were all hot cross buns created equal?
The answer is a resounding NO from both Gugs and Anna.
"There are some dreadful, sawdust textured bread rolls masquerading as hot cross buns with one sad little raisin sitting on the top."
- Dr Anna Trapido, Chef and Food Anthropologist
Normally shops have an abundance of hot cross buns during the build-up to the time when Christians observe Easter.
Trapido explains that a traditional hot cross bun is a spice, butter, egg and sugar-enriched, yeast dough, studded with dried fruit and a cross on the top.
These buns have evolved over the years - it's not just the traditional type that’s available, they also come in extra spicy, chocolate, fruit-free and many other flavours.
