KZN Community Safety Department launches political intervention committee

DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal’s Community Safety department has launched the multi-party political intervention committee in a bid to ensure political stability and peaceful coexistence among parties ahead of the May 29 polls.
The committee was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa back in 2018 due to an increase in political murders in the province.
Friday’s launch took place in Nongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal which has also experienced deadly political shootings since late last year.
Different stakeholders have committed to ensuring that polls are safe.
Different political parties came under one roof in Nongoma on Friday, to discuss a way forward for political tolerance in the political violence-riddled province.
The provincial government says working with the IEC, the justice, crime prevention and security cluster they have done extensive work to bring stability in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Department of Community Safety says there will be increased police visibility in identified violent hotspot areas like Nongoma, eThekwini, Bergville and Maphumulo especially ahead of the polls.
Part of Friday’s meeting was for the different political parties to air their views on how best to keep the province and upcoming polls safe.
Police provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi who was also part of today’s proceedings vowed that police will ensure that the upcoming polls go ahead without incident.
