JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana were held to a 1-1 draw by Andorra in the first of their two FIFA Series friendly matches in the current international break.
In what proved to be a tricky encounter for Bafana, Sekhukhune United attacker Elias Mokwana scored the equaliser in the 25th minute on his debut after goalkeeper Ricardo Goss had gifted the Andorrans the opener in the sixth minute.
Despite a disappointing result against the tiny European nation of around 80,000 people, Coach Hugo Broos walked away with some sense of contentment from his team’s performance.
“I am satisfied, not with the result because I would have liked to win the match, but I am satisfied with the performance of this totally new team. I am satisfied with some players,” said Broos.
Broos fielded a largely experimental side from the one that claimed the bronze medal at AFCON in February. Mokwana, Mlondi Mbanjwa of AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates star Patrick Maswanganyi got their first taste of international football and despite the disappointing result, Broos was happy with what he saw from some of the newcomers.
“I think they know now what the difference is between the PSL and these kinds of games. Even when you play a team that is ranked 150th or something in the FIFA rankings. That was also the goal for us to give those players the chances to have that experience,” Broos said.
Bafana’s next game is against Algeria on Tuesday.
