JOHANNESBURG - The family of a man who was tortured to death allegedly during the filming of a drug-busting TV show has described how the incident continues to take a toll on them.
Former presenter on Moja Love’s Sizokthola programme, Xolani Khumalo, is accused of murdering 49-year-old Robert Varrie last July.
Varrie succumbed to injuries at the Mogoerane Hospital on the East Rand after he was allegedly tortured by the show’s crew members, demanding drugs.
His family is concerned with the lack of urgency in probing his mysterious death.
It's been eight months since Varrie’s family lost a breadwinner, but life isn’t getting easier for his children and siblings, who have been left to pick up the pieces.
A family member, who asked to be kept anonymous, said Varrie’s death not only affected her health but also left his kids traumatised.
"I get nightmares and I dream about him always."
She said Varrie’s eight children were also struggling to come to terms with their father's death.
"When I see his kids, I am heartbroken. His kids are like my kids, he used to love all of them and I love all of his kids as well."
The family wants the TV channel to also be held accountable for the incident and not just the show’s presenter.
