JOHANNESBURG - The family of a man allegedly murdered by crew members of a drug-busting TV show has appointed a private investigator to probe his mysterious death, citing a lack of faith in police.

It's alleged that 49-year-old Robert Varrie was tortured to death during an interrogation on Moja Love’s controversial Sizokthola programme.

The show’s former presenter, Xolani Khumalo, was arrested on murder charges and subsequently released on R20,000 bail last year.

The private investigator, who asked not to be named during a media briefing on Thursday, said charges of defeating the ends of justice and conspiracy to commit murder must be added.

"We are of the opinion that the investigation must be completed by 11th of April. The concern of the family is that on the 11th of April, the magistrate will give them more time to finalise the investigation and subsequently we will see the case being withdrawn."
