JOHANNESBURG - While South Africa commemorated Human Rights Day on 21 March, Namibia celebrated its 34th year of independence.
The country recently mourned the death of its president, Hage Geingob, who passed away at the age of 82, weeks after a cancer diagnosis.
Namibia, which is a former German colony, officially became a sovereign state in 1990 on this day.
Nestled in the southern part of the continent, Namibia has seen many shifts in political power over the years.
However, it has steadily risen in recent years as a highly sought-after travel destination for adventure seekers.
Independence Day in Namibia is marked as a national holiday and citizens celebrate with parades and ceremonies attended by the top leaders.
The name Namibia, originates from the word "nama" meaning "vast place", which is also used to refer to the Namib Desert, which is one of the oldest in the world.
It has been lauded by global travellers for well-maintained roads, good tourism infrastructure and magnificent desert-scapes.
