Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu to square off in Nedbank Cup quarterfinal

JOHANNESBURG - The Nedbank Cup quarterfinal round will be headlined by the fixture between AmaZulu and defending champions Orlando Pirates.

The draw for the quarters was made on Monday night and once again, the biggest clubs remaining in the competition were kept apart. 

The Buccaneers had a relatively easy last 16 encounter with the second-tier Northern Cape side, Hungry Lions, whom they beat 4-0 while Usuthu progressed with a 2-0 win over last season’s finalists Sekhukhune United.

The two most recent meetings in cup competitions between Pirates and AmaZulu have ended in victories for the Soweto giants.

Moreover, the Buccaneers are ambitious to conclude their hat trick of wins after scoring 10 goals in the tournament so far.

Runaway DSTV Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns will be away to the last lower league team left – the University of Pretoria, who are one point off the top of the table in the Motsepe Foundation Championship and automatic promotion to the top flight. 

Stellenbosch FC is in contention for a second piece of silverware this season, after winning the Carling Knockout in December. They have been handed a tricky encounter where they'll host Supersport United, who are desperate to win their first trophy in five years. 

The other fixture in the round will pit the ambitious TS Galaxy, the only national first-division club to have won the Nedbank Cup in its history, playing against Chippa United. 

The dates and venues for the games have yet to be confirmed.
