Ntanzi claims he received death threats from his co-accused after Meyiwa's murder

JOHANNESBURG - The youngest among the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa trial said he received death threats from his co-accused after the murder of the football star.

The court heard Bongani Ntanzi’s second confession statement being read into the record by Magistrate Vivian Cronje on Monday.

Cronje told the court that Ntanzi voluntarily confessed, even claiming that he needed protection from his co-accused.

Ntanzi and five others are standing trial for Meyiwa’s 2014 murder.

"Carlos kept on pointing his finger at me, threatening me, he was also swearing because I was visibly frightened."

Ntanzi, who was 24 at the time of Senzo Meyiwa's murder, signed two confession statements after his arrest in June 2020 - one before a police officer and another before Magistrate Vivian Cronje.

A distinct difference in the second statement is how Ntanzi claimed the third accused, Carlos Mncube, threatened him once they had returned from the scene of Meyiwa’s murder and were back at the Basotho hostel.

This was read by Magistrate Cronje.

"Carlos pointed to Sifiso and said he must warn me, if any word came out that they were involved then he would kill me. Carlos and Sifiso then ordered me to go to the kitchen."  

As these details were read in court on Monday, Ntanzi kept his head down, rarely setting his eyes on the magistrate.
