JOHANNESBURG - Diepkloof hostel residents have warned they will hit the streets again to protest against what they describe as a deplorable state of housing.

On Monday morning, the residents barricaded the N12 east and N1 north at the Diepkloof Interchange, disrupting morning peak traffic.

The residents said they want dignified living spaces with water and electricity.

And while they welcomed the long-awaited installation of electricity and water in their homes for the first time in decades last week, they have accused the Gauteng government of neglect and empty promises in addressing their housing crisis.

Community leader Sanele Msibi said they will protest until 29 May: “We are sick and tired of this corrupt government. We want our money, it’s our money, it’s our budget.”

Hostel residents said that they will not vote until they are shown plans to refurbish the hostel.

MAINTAIN POLICE PRESENCE

Meanwhile, Gauteng police say they will maintain a heavy presence in Diepkloof.

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said police have effectively quelled tensions despite some isolated incidents.

“Although we still have some sporadic incidents, for now I can assure the community that the traffic is flowing our members are there.”

Mavela added that officers have opened a case of public violence in response to the disturbances.

“No arrests have been made so far but there is a case that we have opened because they blockaded the road with burning tyres.

"The only incidents that was reported was a car from Johannesburg Metro Police Department that was damaged as they were throwing stones and also a car from a media house was also damaged.”
