JOHANNESBURG - Labour union NUMSA is mobilising its members to shutdown the bus industry over the long Easter weekend.
This follows a deadlock in wage negotiations with bus companies.
The South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council intervened in the matter to try and resolve the parties’ failure to see eye to eye.
NUMSA said its core demand is an 8% salary increase across the board which has been reduced from 15%, the employer however says it cannot afford the increase.
The union said it has exhausted all avenues in an attempt to resolve this dispute.
Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said, "We have been issued a certificate of non-resolution allowing workers to strike. We hope that employers will come to their senses and drop some of their demands. We think it is extremely unreasonable because they are exploiting workers."
