Cele says new police station in Khayelitsha is not yet operational

CAPE TOWN - While visiting a new police station that has taken over 20 years to build, Police Minister Bheki Cele called on the community of Makhaza in Khayelitsha to take care of the resource.
Cele addressed residents on Tuesday after inspecting the long-awaited and much-needed law enforcement facility in the area.
The police station is the fourth in densely-populated Khayelitsha, with an over two million head count.
It is not operational yet, but is expected to begin working in the next 18 to 24 months after the installation of electricity and furniture.
Cele said this is a good start in the fight against crime in the area.
“We will leave no stone unturned and we will put every shoulder on the wheel to say that let’s work with communities and squeeze out the crime and keep the communities happy. All resources that are given to the community please take care of those resources.”
Meanwhile long-standing resident of Makhaza, Themba Baba said the community would be safer now.
“I arrived here in 1991. When we arrived here there was no police station only the forestry where our people were being murdered and killed.”
The community of Makhaza has been walking over ten kilometres to report crime to Harare police station even at night, but that’s soon to be a thing of the past.
