Majority of Western Cape's R255bn budget to be spent on needs of the poor
Finance and Economic Opportunities MEC Mireille Wenger said most of the money would go to primary and mental health services, learner transport and school nutrition programmes, low-cost housing, and more.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Finance and Economic Opportunities MEC Mireille Wenger says 75% of the R255 billion budget tabled by her department will be spent to champion the needs of the poor in the province.
Wenger tabled the province’s main budget in the provincial legislature on Thursday.
She said most of the money would be going to primary and mental health services, learner transport and school nutrition programmes, low-cost housing, and many other poverty alleviation programmes.
The MEC said R32 billion would also be invested to build and maintain vital infrastructure across the province.
Wenger said they were determined to grow the economy and creating more employment.
"This budget strikes the difficult balance of protecting the essentials now for the poor and vulnerable who need it the most, and prioritising our key interventions that will take us all into the prosperous future we all want."
