CAPE TOWN - The University of Cape Town (UCT) said it is not clear yet when a new Vice-Chancellor (VC) will be appointed.

UCT has been without a permanent VC for a year now.

The position became vacant after Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng took early retirement from her position in March 2023.

Two weeks later, Professor Daya Reddy took over the reins in the interim.

UCT said the interim VC was not appointed for a specific period but was to hold the position until a new head of the institution was appointed.

Applications for the top post closed at the end of January 2024.

However, the university said the recruitment process was still ongoing.

The institution said several related processes around the recruitment process are yet to unfold, including a formal update to be tabled before council later in March.

At the time of Phakeng's departure, the university's council said it was looking for a candidate who would steer the institution towards its vision of excellence, transformation, and sustainability.
