JOHANNESBURG - A tense standoff is unfolding in Ekurhuleni between traffic officials and taxi operators, resulting in a halt in taxi operations this on Thursday.

The Germiston taxi rank has been brought to a standstill following the withdrawal of services by certain taxi associations over the impounding of their vehicles.

This as sparked outrage among taxi operators, leading to a collective decision to suspend services in protest.

What is usually a bustling transport hub in the East Rand, has been left deserted.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and taxi patrol vehicles have been stationed around the taxi rank.

Some commuters, desperate to get to their destinations, had to turn back.

It is understood that police in Bedfordview impounded eight vehicles last night belonging to owners of the greater Germiston Taxi Association.

One of the operators says they were unfairly targeted.

"They beat us and told us we do not own these roads and then they arrested our drivers and took our taxis."

The stayaway has disrupted major routes including Tembisa, Germiston, Benoni, Alberton and Katlehong.
