JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Finance MEC Jacob Mamabolo revealed that about 59% of the province's total budget is spent on paying salaries and wages for government workers.
A significant amount of the money is geared towards health and education, which he described as labour intensive sectors.
On Tuesday, Mamabolo delivered the budget speech for the 2024/25 financial year in the provincial legislature chambers in Johannesburg.
The budget shows the provincial government spends just over R99 billion of its total 165 billion rand budget on employee compensation.
DA Gauteng Spokesperson on finance, Ruhan Robinson, weighed in on the revelations.
"We are very quickly going into that 60% wage cliff, if we have anymore wage increases. With the rapid absorption of new recruits into the community safety department already, we are 7300 people there currently, just imagine what would happen if they are all absorbed, as the premier announced."
