CAPE TOWN - As the world commemorates World Obesity Day South Africa’s Heart and Stroke Foundation said obesity is a massive problem in the country.
The foundation said almost 65% of women and 30% of men are classified as overweight or obese in South Africa.
Its acting Health Promotion Manager Juandre Watson said there's also an increasing prevalence of childhood obesity.
"Now the percentage of children between the ages of 6 and 14 years, who are overweight or obese, is about 13.5%."
Watson said more needs to be done to bring awareness around obesity.
"There has to be mass public intervention and policies that can even influence the different systems that contribute to obesity need to be implemented and adhered to."
