CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town said businesses and households received more than R25 million since the start of the 2022/23 financial year under its Cash for Power programme.
 
There are currently 1,461 sellers benefitting from the scheme, and of these, more than 800 are residential and almost 600 are commercial or industrial.

The city became the first metro to buy excess solar photovoltaics (PV) power from small-scale generators in exchange for municipal bill credits and cash. 
 
The programme is part of a broader plan to end load shedding in Cape Town over time.
 
"The city will buy as much solar power as we can from businesses and households who want to sell to us,” said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
