JOHANNESBURG - The vice-chancellor at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) reportedly cost the institution a whooping R7 million in what’s believed to have been the highest salary for a university executive in 2019.
The exorbitant salary is said to have also included perks and other incentives.
The pay that the University of Johannesburg’s VC pocketed was also double the average of what vice-chancellors across all other universities were being paid that year.
The staggering figures were released by the Council on Higher Education in their findings of the inquiry into the remuneration of VCs and other execs.
From 2005 to 2019, the vice-chancellor’s cost to the company at the various universities grew by 206%.
UJ topped the list by far with R7.1 million, including perks.
Not only is this more than what the president of the country earns but it's also generally better than what the CEOs of most science councils are paid.
It's also enough to pay for a year’s tuition for 128 students.
In 2019, the VC at Stellenbosch University earned the highest basic salary of R4.1 million.
The University of Venda paid its VC the least of 26 universities during that same period.
Despite the fat cheques earned by these execs, the Council on Higher Education found no link between the high pay and institutional performance.
