DURBAN - The African National Congress said it wants to create an integrated justice system as it looks to deal with gender-based violence, crime and corruption.

The integrated system would pull resources from all law enforcement authorities to work as one unit streamlining the response to crime.

This is one of the promises contained in the party’s manifesto which was launched in Durban on Saturday.

ANC senior member and Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said while there is good co-operation between law enforcement authorities, it needs to be enhanced.

"From Home Affairs, police, the NPA, the court system correctional system and reintegration back into society that you must be able to get data of someone who comes into the system at Home Affairs. You don’t have to move up and down with a police docket it must be easily transferred from the police to the NPA, to the court system so that is what we talking about a modernised, efficient, fast justice system,” said Lamola.

Even though the DA on the other hand is calling for the devolution of police systems to provinces.

Lamola said this is not in line with the country’s constitution.

“The constitution is very clear on the national government’s role and its powers and the role of provincial and local governments. What is currently happening in the Western Cape is unconstitutional and it will not pass any constitutional muster, it’s a waste of time by the DA government," said Lamola.
