JOHANNESBURG - Woolworths has recalled its peanut butter dairy ice cream after it was found that it has high levels of a naturally occurring toxin known as aflatoxin.
The retail giant recalled the product on Friday urging those who may have bought the ice cream to return it to their local stores for a full refund.
This comes after a number of peanut butter products were taken off the shelves earlier this month as they contained higher than legal amounts of the toxin.
Retail giant Woolworths said some of its products were taken for testing after stores including Dischem and Pick n Pay removed peanut butter brands off the shelves as they were believed to be unsafe for consumption.
It said that while the peanut butter dairy ice cream has been recalled all its other products are safe to eat.
Aflatoxin is a mold that occurs naturally during food production and is usually found in nuts, maize and rice.
While this product can be consumed in small doses it can be extremely toxic when ingested by humans in high doses.
Woolworths says full refunds will be issued to those who return the product as it strives to maintain strict quality standards.
