JOHANNESBURG - Eyewitness News editor-in-chief and the current chairperson of the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) Sibusiso "Sbu" Ngalwa has been appointed to the executive committee of The Africa Editors Forum (TAEF).

Ngalwa will assume the role of treasurer general in the continental forum.

TAEF held its bi-annual general meeting in Kenya, Nairobi, on Tuesday, where a new executive committee was elected to steer the organisation for a two-year term.

“It is an honour to be elected into the leadership of this important organisation at such a crucial time in our lives as journalists," said a delighted Ngalwa of his appointment.

"The headwinds ahead of us require the new TAEF leadership to be steadfast in its commitment to ensure that as African journalists we continue to tell the unfolding stories of our respective countries and of Africa as a whole."

He further noted the challenges and threats concerning the sustainability of the media industry.

"I believe that this leadership collective is equal to the task."

TAEF is an expression of the need for editors and all media practitioners in the continent to work together towards preserving journalism and promoting media freedom.

The South African government  has congratulated Ngalwa on his appointment.

The acting director-general of GCIS Nomonde Mnukwa said Ngalwa's involvement in TAEF will "enhance the forum's efforts in promoting values of media freedom on a broader scale and fostering collaboration among African media organisations".

She further said Ngalwa's new role is a reinforcement and extension of SANEF's "professionalism and commitment to journalistic principles".

THE NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE:

  • Churchill Otieno (Kenya) – Chairperson
  • Emmanuel K Dogbevi (Ghana) – Deputy Chairperson
  • Emang Mutapati (Botswana) – General Secretary
  • Sbu Ngalwa (South Africa) – Treasurer General

The other council members elected are: Durra Gambo from Sudan, Zubeida Kananu from Kenya, Marrianne Mujind Muland from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zine Cherfaoui from Algeria.

These Council members are joined by 15 other members representing the five regions of TAEF - making it the most diverse on gender, age, and regional representation.

Mathatha Tsedu, veteran South African journalist and founding member of TAEF, was honoured with a Lifetime Service to Journalism Award.
