CAPE TOWN - The University of Cape Town's (UCT) council has approved concessions for students with fee debt exceeding R10,000.
UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola said the university already had a council-approved policy that allows students with a debt of less than R10,000 to register. Other measures include debt appeals and a grace period.
Moholola said UCT management and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) tabled a joint proposal on fee debt in a special council meeting recently.
"UCT Council deliberated on a joint proposal by management and the SRC seeking approval for a framework to grant concessions to students with fee debt exceeding R10,000. Council approved this proposal."
Moholola said the proposal was a result of extensive engagements between management and the SRC over a number of weeks.
"It should be noted that the proposal only sought approval to deviate from the student fee and debt recovery policy, and not to write off debt. The university and the SRC will continue working towards fundraising initiatives to assist students who face financial challenges."
Moholola said UCT is appealing to anyone to consider making a donation to the university.
