CAPE TOWN - The chairperson of the Desmond Tutu Intellectual Property (IP) Trust, Dr Mamphele Ramphele, said the Old Granary building, which has been renamed as the Desmond & Leah Tutu House, will be used as a place of healing.
Ramphele was speaking at the unveiling ceremony for the renaming of the building on Tuesday.
The 200-year-old historical structure in District Six was previously used as a bakery, a jail for women, a customs house, police station, court, and, most recently, a Department of Public Works office.
Ramphele said the late struggle stalwart, Archbishop Tutu, would have been joyful for the gesture, as he advocated for equality and justice throughout his life.
"The Desmond & Leah Tutu House will be hosting two institutions that are celebrating his legacy. The foundation has programmes that we are outward facing, annual peace lecture, programmes for children, and of course, mounting exhibitions."
