JOHANNESBURG - The waiting game for South African citizens and political parties is over because the general elections are scheduled for Wednesday, 29 May 2024.
The Presidency brought this to light on Tuesday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement, as the first citizen of South Africa, in line with the Electoral Act enshrined in the Constitution.
This year’s elections coincide with 30 years of freedom and democracy.
Moreover, Ramaphosa met with the country’s premiers and the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa to discuss the upcoming polls.
“Beyond the fulfillment of our constitutional obligation, these upcoming elections are also a celebration of our democratic journey and a determination of the future that we all desire,” said Ramaphosa.
He further urged citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote and called on those who will embark on electioneering campaigns to do so in a peaceful fashion.
Thus far, the Economic Freedom Fighters and the Democratic Alliance have held their election manifesto launches.
Meanwhile, the governing African National Congress is due to launch its manifesto this Saturday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
