JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg motorists are being urged to steer clear of the M1 North near the Crown Interchange following reports of roadside robberies targeting motorists.
A group of gun-wielding criminals are exploiting the morning gridlock in the CBD, committing robberies on motorists at gunpoint along the M2 offramp.
One distressed motorist told Eyewitness News that the muggings were causing chaos.
"There are five guys walking around with 9mm [pistols] in their hands, literally robbing car after car. It's a mess. People are overreacting, they're crashing their cars into the barrier lane because they're scared of being robbed in their cars. Please send emergency vehicles, people are being terrorised in their cars."
The robberies have brought the area to a standstill, with traffic backed up as far as Gold Reef City.
