During his State of the Province Address (SOPA) on Friday night, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the house represented a great piece of the country's history and it could not be left in ruins.

"The house of President Mandela is in a bad state, and this is embarrassing. Even though we don’t want to interfere in the family affairs of Mandela, we really believe the house of our founding president can’t be left unattended in that particular fashion."
