JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is set to deliver the State of the Province Address (SOPA) on Monday evening amid a chequered track record of keeping his promises.

Monday night will mark Lesufi’s second State of the Province Address, which will also be the final one for the provincial government’s sixth administration.

As Lesufi’s tenure comes to an end, Eyewitness News takes a look at some of the promises Gauteng’s number one resident made in his first SOPA address.

During his first SOPA, opposition parties criticised Panyaza Lesufi for what they called unrealistic pie-in-the-sky ideas.

In his SOPA speech last year, Lesufi promised to employ 6,000 young people to patrol the streets of Gauteng 24/7.

The premier has since unveiled the Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, however they are not on the streets and are currently receiving training from the South African army following concerns over their legal statuses.

Lesufi also promised to install CCTV cameras across the province and e-panic buttons in some areas.

Last week - the provincial government announced the installation of 8,000 CCTV cameras across the province.

However, the e-panic buttons are reportedly still in the works.

Other outstanding promises from Lesufi include state-owned banks, a pharmaceutical company and the R1.2 billion 800-megawatt solar farm.
