JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department says preliminary investigations looking into the shooting of a principal by a grade 6 learner have revealed that it was planned on WhatsApp.

Last week, a 13-year-old shot the principal of Primrose Primary School in Germiston after he instructed pupils to gather in the foyer and take out their workbooks to study.

Earlier on Monday, Chiloane visited the school and addressed learners, urging them to respect their teachers while reassuring them that they are safe at school.

Last week, Chiloane expressed his dismay and shock regarding the shooting - leading his department to make psycho-social services available to all those affected.

He also revealed that the arrested pupil was part of a WhatsApp group with other learners where they allegedly discussed the shooting.

Chiloane said the principal - who has been identified as Mr Selepe - is recovering in hospital and will survive the shooting.

He said he hopes police also arrest the learner's parents for their negligence.
