CAPE TOWN - A 19-year-old man linked to the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Eerste River in Cape Town is expected to appear in court soon.

Monneashia Prins' lifeless body was found covered in mud in a canal near her home in Ithemba Farms informal settlement on Saturday.

She had gone missing the previous day but a missing person's report was only filed after the discovery.

Her parents were asked to identify the body found, which happened to be their daughter.

Western Cape Missing Persons unit founder, Candice van der Rheede said that people who preyed on children should face the full might of the law.

"I think government should really take further steps in giving out harsher punishments to these perpetrators because at the end of the day, the only reason why they do these things is because they can get away with it. When they do go to prison, they get protected, they get put in their own cells, and this is not on. They get meals, whereas our people at the old age homes do not even have proper meals to eat."
