JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Basic Department said it's believed a learner shot his principal during school hours after being scolded to study.
The shocking incident happened on Friday at Primrose Primary Hill School in Germiston.
The principal is currently in hospital recovering from his injuries, while the boy has been arrested and is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon on a charge of attempted murder.

The department’s Steve Mabona said according to their information, earlier in the day the principal had found the boy among a group of learners loitering in the school foyer and told them to take out their workbooks and study.
"The implicated grade 6 learner allegedly mumbled some words which the principal ignored. The principal saw the perpetrator again later near the staff room and unfortunately, the grade 6 boy learner shot at the principal with a firearm."
Mabona said it’s believed the firearm belonged to the child’s parent.
He said MEC Matome Chiloane is “deeply devastated”.
"MEC has indicated that really he’s taken aback by this nature of the incident. Just looking at the manner of how this incident occurred, it’s really discouraging when you see such acts happening in our schools."
