DURBAN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the eThekwini council in KwaZulu-Natal expressed dismay at parties who voted against its motion to have the council dissolved.
The party alleged that some in the council did not care about the interests of residents but themselves.
On Wednesday, the council voted on a motion tabled by the DA in a bid to dissolve the council, claiming that it was dysfunctional.
However, the party only had the support of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and ActionSA, while the African National Congress (ANC), the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and smaller parties voted against the motion.
DA caucus leader, Thabani Mthethwa, said this would not discourage them.
"What we can promise the people of this city is that, as the DA, we will remain the effective opposition. We will make sure that we fight their corner and if it means that we submit the same motion when the time permits, we are definitely going to do so."
Meanwhile, the IFP’s Mdu Nkosi had this to say: "Many of our colleagues think it’s about them and they think about their seats.
"It’s about the people of eThekwini who are not happy - there is no water and there are so many challenges in eThekwini."
Nkosi added that residents needed to use the upcoming polls to ensure challenges faced at local government did not affect them more after the polls.
