JOHANNESBURG - A fake statement claiming Bafana Bafana star Teboho Mokoena has put his career in jeopardy has gone viral.

A bogus letterhead purported to be from Egyptian club Al Ahly claims that they are no longer interested in signing Mokoena because of comments he made at Bafana’s arrival at OR Tambo International on Wednesday.

Mokoena was one of the players who spoke at their reception at the airport – a gathering that was predominantly attended by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters sporting their signature red.

Also present was EFF leader Julius Malema, who Mokoena called ‘his favourite president in the country’ while addressing the crowd on stage.

The hoax statement, written by an unknown person and intended to cause a stir, claims the Cairo-based club cancelled trials that Mokoena was meant to attend “next month” based on what the anonymous author says were “divisive comments”.

The false statement uses an outdated logo and does not appear on any of Al Ahly’s social media pages or their website.

The writing and grammar leave a lot to be desired.

Moreover, the assertion that Mokoena, who has been included in the AFCON Team of the Tournament and is the PSL’s reigning Footballer of the Season, would attend trials with Al Ahly is woefully misplaced.

The post has been shared and viewed on various platforms, thousands of times with many social media users not questioning its validity.
