CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has welcomed the resignation of former Cape Town mayor and safety MEC, Dan Plato, from the party.

Plato has joined the People's Movement for Change led by former provincial African National Congress (ANC) chairperson, Marius Fransman.

Announcing his resignation from the DA on Tuesday, Plato accused the party of moving away from its commitment to serving the needs of the poor and vulnerable.

He also took a swipe at the DA's stance on the Israel and Palestine conflict, accusing the party of suppressing pro-Palestine voices within the organisation.

Western Cape DA leader Tertuis Simmers said that they noted Plato's resignation.

"We thank him for his years of service, both to the DA and at different levels of government. We wish him well in his endeavours."
