DURBAN - The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) said it is worrying that the killing of politicians has become a “lucrative business for hitmen”.

SALGA briefed the media in Durban on Wednesday, regarding political killings that have plagued the province.

In the latest incident, councillor Ndukwenhle Duma was shot and killed in Mtubatuba, north of KZN.

During the attack, a school pupil was killed, while three others were injured.

SALGA said there needs to be an action plan from the government to curb political killings in the province.

The organisation’s chairperson in the province, Thami Ntuli said it was evident that the business of hitmen is thriving in the province.

“Considering the fact that Duma has always been surrounded by his security team, and the moment he let his guard down he was killed, and it shows that the hitmen were hunting for him for a long time. This means the killing of politicians is a lucrative business for hitmen.”

Ntuli also raised concern about the use of illegal firearms during the hits.

“We should also be afraid of the reports that the killers used high calibre firearms like AK47s.”

Ntuli added that the government needed to ensure that the upcoming polls were without any violent incidents.
