CAPE TOWN - The University of Cape Town's (UCT) management said it's working on a solution to end an ongoing employee strike at the institution.

About 100 members of UCT's Employees Union have been striking at the University's Bremner Building since Thursday.

Some of the union's demands include increasing salaries by 7.5% and the immediate release of payments for 2023's performance awards.

UCT spokesperson, Elijah Moholola said the university will seek to ensure the strike does not impact operations.

"Management will continue to work towards ensuring that the strike action is brought to a speedy end."

Moholola said UCT management is optimistic that an agreement can be reached soon.

However, UCT Employees Union chairperson Tsebo Litabe said the institution's management has not yet indicated they are willing to bargain.

"At this stage, we're on the second day of strike, we are hoping to continue up until the 16th of February unless there's an intervention."

Litabe said the union will be meeting with management to discuss their demands on Saturday.
