JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg-born singer, Tyla, has won a Grammy Award for her song, Water.

The South African artist clinched the Best African Music Performance in the category's first year at the 66th Grammy's ceremony, which was held in Los Angeles.

She was up against stiff competition, with Burna Boy and Ayra Starr, among others, also nominated for the award.

Upon acceptance of the Grammy, she said she never thought she would say that she won a Grammy at 22 years old.

“If you don’t know me, my name is Tyla from South Africa, and last year, God decided to change my whole life. So, thank you so much to God, thank you to my team, and my family. 

"I know my mother’s crying somewhere in here. Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category – it’s so important.”
