Hundreds of industry heavyweights set to gather in Cape Town for Mining Indaba

JOHANNESBURG - The annual Mining Indaba is set to kick off on Monday morning in Cape Town as hundreds of industry heavyweights gather in the metro to talk shop. 

This week’s investment event will mark 30 years since its inception.

Discussions are expected to focus on sourcing investment for the mineral-rich African continent, and ways to get ahead of supply chain disruptions in the industry.

While the Mining Indaba is a catalyst for development on the African continent, the starting point for 2024’s talks is set to be an honest and frank evaluation of the state of the sector. 

This includes a close look at South Africa’s domestic position amid a chronic energy crisis, and now trouble in the logistics sector.

As South Africa plays host again, the milestone event also takes place on the back of looming retrenchments at mining firms, labour unrest, safety challenges, and rising crime. 

Mining magnates now want the sector and governments from Africa and other parts of the world to find proactive solutions to the systemic and structural challenges.

Challenges aside, the strong presence of Africa’s mineral-rich countries is set to be a show of force of the ongoing growth opportunities the continent offers to the mining industry. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa is among the headline speakers expected on Monday morning.
