JOHANNESBURG - More than 33,500 people have made use of the Home Affairs Department’s extended hours this weekend so far.
The department opened its doors for an extra two hours from 4pm until 6pm on Friday and remained open yesterday and today, in support of voter registration.
This with the aim of assisting those who still need an ID to register.
Departmental spokesperson Siya Qoza says over the last two days, nearly 23,400 people had come to collect their IDs and 9,100 to apply for IDs, with more than 920 having received temporary identification certificates on the spot.
"Our offices remain open today. They opened at 8 o’clock in the morning and they remain so up until 5 o’clock this evening. We encourage anyone who would want to come and collect or apply for their identity document to come and visit their nearest office."
