MBOMBELA - The second day of the voter registration drive has gotten off to a slow start at Mayibuye Secondary School at Mgwenya circuit in the Mbombela Local Municipality.
Sunday is the last day for citizens to register to vote at the polling stations – they do have an opportunity to do so at municipal offices or online, which will halted when President Cyril Ramaphosa proclaims the election date and the voters roll is closed.
This year's election is seen as a referendum on the performance of the governing African National Congress (ANC).
Eyewitness News had an opportunity to speak to some of the learners at the school and they said that they were subjected to unhygienic toilets on an almost daily basis.
They said that the inhumane state of these toilets posed a constant health risk for them.
The sad part is that some of the pupils are forced to use these toilets or are forced to go back home in order to relieve themselves before returning to school to continue with their education for the day.
This is happening as South Africa gears up to celebrate 30 years of democracy in April.
There is currently a parents' meeting underway to address the issue of the toilets.
