JOHANNESBURG - North West police have arrested 94 illegal miners in Scheerpoort, near the Haartebeesport dam, after they were found in possession of mining equipment.

Officials say the suspects were arrested during an operation on Thursday, after illegal gold mining activities were reported in the area.

Police say the suspects were found in possession of large quantities of gold-bearing material.

Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said generators worth R1.3 million were also seized.

"The suspects who are mainly Zimbabweans and Mozambican foreign nationals, are expected to make a first appearance before the Brits magistrates' court on Monday, 5 February 2024."
